In summer, I often head up into the mountains around Igls for leisurely afternoon hikes and had frequently noticed and admired a wonderful old building set in private gardens. I asked around about the property and found out that it’s a private castle, which can be exclusively rented for holidays and events. I was offered a tour through a friend and jumped at the offer.
The castle is called Schloss Igls and was originally built in 1887 by the Count of Kollensberg as a private summer residence. Since then, the castle has received guests as a bed & breakfast, been occupied by troops during the war and been run as a five star Relais & Châteaux hotel. Today, the castle and grounds can be privately rented for holidays, weddings, conferences and other exclusive events.
The castle sleeps up to 34 people across 18 rooms and 3 suites. The building is bursting with character, the rooms are all meticulously furnished and no two rooms are the same. The grounds are something special too – beautifully manicured, private, peaceful and boasting stunning alpine views. No matter where you look, it’s clear that this castle has been furnished with love and cherished over the years.
The castle would be a wonderful destination for a private retreat – maybe a honeymoon, private getaway or family holiday. And if your budget doesn’t quite stretch far enough to rent the entire castle (daily rent is € 5,000) then it’s possible to rent the Boutique Apartment for € 800 per night (min. of two nights). Personally, this is still a little out of my price range but the thing that really roused my interest was the idea of the castle as an event venue.
Many weddings, conferences, parties and incentives have been hosted in this gem of a destination. And don’t be fooled by the historic charm, the castle also offers lots of modern practicalities, such as a lovely swimming pool and spa area, a professional kitchen and modern conference facilities…not to mention the amazing chef Dietmar E. Fröhlich who creates exquisite dishes to suit individual requirements. There are weekend wedding packages from € 16,500 and I can’t think of a more picturesque place to say “I do”.
Finally, I can’t finish this post without mentioning the great location again. After all, I only came across the castle in the first place because I was up in Igls for an afternoon hike. This charming village is famous for hosting Winter Olympics events (1964 and 1976) and is just 15 minutes from the city of Innsbruck. There are many activities on offer in summer and in winter and Innsbruck Airport is just a stone’s throw away. Read more about Igls here: Igls near Innsbruck.
